Investigating and documenting human rights abuses while promoting legislation to stop them is the mission of Human Rights Watch, originally known as Helsinki Watch (1978–1988). The organization that was first established in 1978 as Helsinki Watch to keep track of the Soviet Union's compliance with the Helsinki Accords later grew in size and focus. In 1988, it got its present name. Its main office is in New York City.

Human Rights Watch

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), which establishes essential civil, social, and political rights, is monitored by Human Rights Watch, which also undertakes fact-finding investigations into cases of human rights abuses. A yearly publication called World Report provides an overview of the current human rights situation throughout the globe.

The organization leverages the public attention its report receives to hold human rights violators responsible for their acts and to put pressure on them to make amends. The organization has taken up related issues such as homosexual rights, child labor, war crimes, and human trafficking.

The coalition has contributed significantly to the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines' successful efforts, among others, in the field of human rights.
